This weekend I’d like to cook some recipes for my bento next week, any good ideas?

Various #1 - Nikuman!

Nikuman

I wanted to make nikumans for a long time! I found this recipe, which doesn’t use yeast: http://www.annathered.com/2009/03/26/how-to-make-kodama-steamed-pork-buns/

I have to say, they came out DELICIOUS! Although the dough was a bit difficult to work with. It was superelastic but ripped very easily, even where it seemed okay and thick… holes suddenly started to appear on the buns!!

So I had to use less filling after the first couple of buns, and about 1/4 of it remained unused. I cooked it in a frying pan with little oil and ate it with ketchup :D

Bento #1 - Miniburgers!

Bento #1

My first bento! And althought it wasn’t especially pretty I must say it was very yummy!

On this tier there were:

- rice

- tamagoyaki

- miniburgers, made with pork + egg + onion + bread crumbs (I found the recipe on the Just Bento book - not website)

On the second tier there were:

- carrots

- apple

Japanese Breakfast

Japanese Breakfast

So, I want to start a complete Japanese diet when I begin making my lunchboxes. I researched a little on the web and found that almost all Japanese breakfast are the same:

rice + miso soup + various side dishes, such as meat, tamagoyaki, omurice, fish and others…

I already wake up at 5:30 in the morning so I don’t wish to wake up EARLIER to cook my breakfast, and I’m thinking about some alternatives that will give me a similar amount of proteins and vitamins and whatever.

Rice is ok because I could make it the night before or buy a rice cooker (which I want SO much!), maybe I could add a scrambled egg and a couple of sausages/wurstels, things that are very fast to cook. I need an alternative for miso soup now, any suggestion?

New Bento Recipes Books

To start making bentos, I really needed some easy, quick and good recipes. Also I needed a lot of advices about which foods you can or cannot put into a box for several hours, which ones you can cook the day before, and which ones to combine together for a healthy and delicious lunch.

So I bought myself these 3 books from Amazon:

- The Just Bento Cookbook ( http://amzn.com/4770031246 )

- Yum-Yum Bento Box: Fresh Recipes for Adorable Lunches ( http://amzn.com/1594744475 )

- Japanese Women Don’t Get Old or Fat: Secrets of My Mother’s Tokyo Kitchen ( http://amzn.com/0385339984 )

I already read most of them. As a beginner, I find The Just Bento the more interesting one, and I also like very much the website associated with it: http://justbento.com/

Yum-yum Bento Box, as the title says, focus on the decorative items and techniques, but provides the reader with some recipes too. Japanese Women is a nice book to read although it comes with very few recipes and no photos. But it succeeded in convincing me to try the japanese diet, not only for lunch but all-day round.

I plan on starting 2 weeks from now!

My very first Bento Box

This is what I chose. Not too small, not too large. It’s a cute 2-tiered bento box delivered to me from Japan, with a pink/black/gold sakura theme.

I love it!
